Joyce B. K. Abbey
Case Study Chief Investigator, Johnson Space Center Knowledge Management Office
Joyce Abbey grew up in the shadow of Johnson Space Center (JSC) during the Apollo era studying the work of her father, George Abbey*. Following in her father’s footsteps, she joined the “family business” in aerospace.
Joyce is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in Psychology. After spending time in the non-profit sector, Joyce began her STEM career working on the Space Shuttle program and now develops Case Studies for the Johnson Space Center detailing significant aerospace events to extract lessons learned to apply to current and future NASA programs. She has authored over 50 Case Studies and serves as the Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) Engineering Contract Employee Communications/External Relations Director for SAIC.
Joyce also pursues a personal passion – radio. She hosted a morning drive-time show at a local radio station and then went on to host a web-based radio program to build public awareness and interest in current and historic aerospace events and achievements.
Joyce serves on various non-profit boards/committees and inspires collaboration to increase STEM education and public awareness. She manages STEM educational outreach activities and created several flagship events centered on aerospace education.
Joyce is a celebrated advocate for aerospace education and has received the following:
- SAIC CEO’s Achievement Award (two-time recipient)
- SAIC’s 2023 Citizen of the Year
- NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal in 2024
- NASA Space Flight Awareness Honoree
- Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Citizen of the Year
- 2019 JSC Director’s Innovation Award winner
- Joyce Abbey Day in the City of Nassau Bay (her hometown) on July 3, 2020
*George Abbey is a member of the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame.
