Texas native and combat B-24 Liberator pilot, Joe M. Kilgore served in the Mediterranean Theatre during World War II, where he distinguished himself in engagements against German forces in North Africa and against targets in Nazi-occupied Europe. Cited for courage, leadership, and gallantry while flying with the Ninth Air Force, he was awarded many decorations including the Distinguished Service Cross. Kilgore continued in the reserves after World War II and retired as a major general. Kilgore pursued a political career serving in the Texas House of Representatives and the U.S. Congress where he continued to be a strong supporter of aviation and space technology.
