Lone Star Flight Museum is honored to present our friend and instrumental leader Scott Rozzell the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. As a Museum Board of Director since 2002, and Board Chairman from 2015 to 2023, Scott has led the museum board and staff to new heights. Scott was integral in the reimagining and relocation of the museum to Houston’s Ellington Airport in 2017 following the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in 2008, transforming the beloved aviation museum into an impactful STEM education center and world-class museum.
Scott’s love of aviation predates both his volunteering at the museum and his career. He was born and raised in Wake Village, Texas. It’s a small town near Texarkana that was developed in the early 1940s as a home for workers from area ammunition plants and whose streets were named after WWII heroes and battles. He was destined toward an affinity to flying and historic warbirds. At 16, he worked at a Texarkana airport, washing planes, pumping gas, and doing odd jobs. His payment…flying lessons. Scott earned his wings just a year later and has been flying ever since.
After years of focusing on his education, career, and family, Scott bought his first plane, a Cessna 172. Over many years, he has owned a North American T-6 and a Beechcraft C-45 and currently owns a Fairchild F-24. That beautiful award-winning plane is currently on display in our Waltrip Hangar.
Scott graduated from Texas High School in 1967, attended Southern Methodist University where he earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science, and later earned a J.D. law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. He then began a remarkable career in the legal and energy sectors. He spent 26 years at Baker Botts and ended his tenure there as a Senior Partner. He went on to spend the last 13 years of his career at CenterPoint Energy as Executive Vice President of General Counsel & Corporate Secretary before retiring in 2014.
Scott’s other board involvement and leadership roles have ranged from former Board Vice Chair of Powell Industries to former Director of the State Bar of Texas, former Board Chair and Sustaining Life Fellow of Texas Bar Foundation, former Board President and Sustaining Life Fellow of Houston Bar Association, former Board Chair of Texas Commission for Lawyer Discipline, and former Board of Visitors member of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. His recognition and accolades abound, and the Lone Star Flight Museum is honored he has brought his knowledge, passion, and support to the museum.
Scott has two grown children, Stacey Murphree and Kimberly McVey, and four grandchildren. We celebrate Scott’s impact and the leadership he has exuded for two decades at Lone Star Flight Museum.
