CRAFTY AIRCRAFT

Discover the early history of flight with sometimes good, sometimes crazy ideas for flying machines. Hot air balloons, planes, helicopters, rockets and more – focus on a different type of flyer each day. Experiment with the science that makes each aircraft work and build flying contraptions that follow the same rules of flight. Play games with your flyers, explore things that look like they shouldn’t fly but do and invent your own flying toy just like the Wright Brothers.

ACES AND LEGENDS

The battles in the skies started with the race for dominant engineering to make the next bigger and faster aircraft design. Each day, examine a different set of warbirds – observers, trainers, dive bombers, fighters, and heavy bombers – up close to see how differences in technology meant life or death on the battlefield, and learn about the pilots and crew that relied on their machine to get the job done. Hop in our networked flight simulators with your camp-mates making up a squadron to recreate WWII missions by defending a bombing run in a P-51 Mustang, dive-bombing a battleship in an SBD Dauntless, and dogfighting in a Corsair.

AERO DERBY DASH

This challenge will test your skills and nerves! Each race segment puts you into the world of the most demanding places people fly. Can you make it through the Grand Canyon, as a bush pilot in the tundra, through remote mountains, or land on an aircraft carrier? Learn about the geography, weather, and other conditions that make each location so risky as you race around the world.

FLY GIRLS

Women pilots during World War II? Yes! In this girl-centric camp, retrace the steps of historic women in aviation – from Queen Bess wowing the crowds in the 1920’s, the service of WASPs during the war, and the spirit of Amelia Earhart. Follow the training regiment of the WASPs through flight school to learn the science and physics of aviation and use your new navigating and piloting skills to reenact their flights in our simulators.

GO ZERO G! Mini Camp

In a 3-day camp, cross the thin line from air to space. The Space Shuttle is a rocket on the way up, a satellite in orbit, and an aircraft on landing. See how astronauts lived in the shuttle cabin as you explore NASA’s crew cabin trainer, inspect the flight simulator that trained all the shuttle pilots, and learn how to fly from outer space to a thin runway.

PILOT MAKER I-PRIMARY TRAINING

The T-6 Texan was called the “Pilot Maker” because it was the last training plane young pilots flew before taking on the WWII Warbird fighters and bombers. Follow beginner flight school training as you learn the science that a pilot needs to know, how physics is used to control the aircraft, and the mechanics inside the planes. Each day, practice your new piloting skills on our flight simulators as you advance through a series of training missions. After completing your primary training, test your flying skills in a warbird dogfight at the end of the week.

Dates: June 12-16, July 10-14, July 17-21

PILOT MAKER II-BASIC TRAINING

So, you’ve caught the aviation bug and are ready for more? After completing Pilot Maker I, continue your training to a greater skill set including flying in more real-world situations. You’ve learned how to navigate a flight path, but can you calculate the trip and land in a gusting crosswind, at night, with a 1000 ft cloud ceiling? In this next level training, perfect your piloting skills of maintaining altitude, controlled turns, and instrument flight while dealing with weather conditions, convection currents, and mechanical failures.
