BRUCE BOHANNON - June 21, 1958 – July 24, 2024 The board of directors, staff and volunteers of the Lone Star Flight Museum were saddened to learn of the passing of Texas Aviation Hall of Fame member, museum supporter and aviation world record holder Bruce Bohannon.
It has been our honor to display Bruce's famous Exxon Flyin' Tiger at the museum.
We send our sincere condolences to the Bohannon family and friends.
William V. Tassell graduated from high school in 1967 and enlisted in the Air Force on October 25, 1968. He completed basic training at Lackland AFB and technical training as a Basic Helicopter Mechanic at Shepard AFB. His first duty station was Detachment 12, Central Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service at Randolph AFB, working on Kamen HH-43B helicopters.
Promoted to Airman First Class in August 1969, he received additional training for Sikorsky CH-3E helicopters and reported to the 21st Special Operations Squadron in Thailand in January 1970.
Bill was promoted to Sergeant in September 1970 and later served at the 1st Aerospace Cartographic and Geodetic Service at Forbes AFB, Kansas, where he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. After being promoted to Staff Sergeant in September 1971, he was honorably discharged in October 1972.
He graduated with a BBA from Washburn University in 1976 and worked for various oil and gas companies across Kansas, Texas, and Missouri before retiring in 2014.
In 2018, Bill began volunteering at the Lone Star Flight Museum, becoming a lead docent and currently working in Flight Ops. He is also the Plane Captain (crew chief) of the DC-3. ... See MoreSee Less
