Cessna L-19 / 0-1A Bird Dog
Join us in welcoming the November Plane of the Month, the Cessna L-19, known also as 0-1A Bird Dog. Introduced in 1950, the Cessna L-19 “Bird Dog” was the first all-metal, high-wing, single-engine aircraft used by the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Marine Corps for observation, reconnaissance, and artillery control. This aircraft was also used for Air Force and Army purposes and was known to them as O-E1.
Built to replace older aircraft like the Piper L-4 and Stinson L-5, it featured tandem seating, angled side windows, Continental O-470 engine, and nearly 360-degree visibility for superior observation. Cessna was given the “Bird Dog” name to honor its role in locating and tracking enemy positions. During the Korean War, the Bird Dog was used to mark targets for attack aircraft using phosphorous rockets. Its versatility and reliability made it a legend among military observation planes.
