Captain Amaryllis Cotto, USAFR
Aerial Reconnaissance Weather Officer for the hurricane hunting AFR 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, National Weather Service forecaster in Houston, Texas.

After witnessing the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in her hometown of Homestead, Florida, Amaryllis Cotto turned fear into fascination and a lifelong mission. Today, she serves as an Aerial Reconnaissance Weather Officer with the Air Force Reserve’s elite 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, famously known as the Hurricane Hunters. She has served 6 years in the United States Air Force and has been with the National Weather Service for 13 years.
Flying directly into the heart of major storms, Cotto helps gather critical data to improve forecasting and save lives. Based in Houston, Texas, she also works as a forecaster for the National Weather Service, continuing her commitment to public safety from the skies and the ground.
A proud graduate of Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, Cotto credits her education and military service for opening the door to this rare and thrilling career. Her message to future aviators and meteorologists: “Hard work pays off. Persistence and consistency are key.”
