Scout workshops are part of Your Summer Passport to Adventure at Lone Star Flight Museum, sponsored by:
general information
- All supplies are provided at the workshop.
- All youth must be escorted to the classroom by an adult and signed in.
- Adults who wish to stay on site during the workshop must purchase admission to the museum.
- Classes include a 30 minute lunch break. Scouts can bring their own lunch or purchase at our Minuti Cafe.
- Scouts needing to reschedule a workshop registration must contact scouts@lonestarflight.org no less than one week before the workshop. Unattended workshops cannot be refunded.
- Youth Members on an Aviator level membership or higher save on badge workshops! No discount code needed, just login to your member account to register. Become a member today!
Badge requirements are completed within the workshop for most badges. When the class is over, the badge is ready for approval by your troop leader.

Registrations/Tickets for museum programs/events are valid only for the specified program/event on the specified date(s) of the purchase program/event. Registrations/Tickets are not refundable, transferable, exchangeable, or applicable to future dates or other programs/events. Registrations/Tickets cannot be discounted after purchase. Programs/events are subject to cancellation or change. In such cases a program/event is cancelled or changed, registration/tickets will be rescheduled to another valid program/event within 60 days of the original program/event date.

NEW! Air of the Wolf: Wolf Cub Scout Adventure
It’s time to take flight!
Do you know the secret to making a paper airplane fly longer or farther? In this exciting Adventure, Wolf Cub Scouts will discover the science of flight while having a blast building and testing their very own aircraft.
From folding techniques to aerodynamic testing, scouts will explore how different shapes and folds change how things fly.
What Scouts Will Do:
•Build Multiple Paper Airplanes: Learn different folding styles and designs to see which ones work best.
•Test the Airplanes: Put those creations to the test and see how tweaks can improve distance and hangtime.
•Participate in a Paper Airplane Derby: Compete in a fun, friendly derby to see whose plane flies the highest, farthest, or stays in the air the longer.
•Build a Balsa Wood Glider: Take engineering skills to the next level by constructing a real balsa wood glider from scratch.
NEW! Super Science: Bear Cub Scout Adventure
The Super Science adventure is a hands-on, highly engaging elective for Bear Cub Scouts (3rd grade). It is designed to spark curiosity and introduce young minds to the wonders of scientific investigation through fun, interactive experiments.
What Scouts Will Do
To earn the Super Science loop, Bear Scouts will put on their scientist hats and complete four primary investigations:
•Requirement 1: Static Electricity Investigation Discover the invisible push and pull of static electricity! Scouts will use a static charge to magically “Race the Can” across the room.
•Requirement 2: Sink-or-Float Investigation Will it sink, or will it swim? Scouts will learn about experiment variables and buoyancy by testing how different objects behave in the water.
•Requirement 3: Color-Morphing Investigation Mix things up! In this investigation, Scouts will combine oil and water to observe how different liquids react and test whether they truly mix together.
•Requirement 4: Color-Layering Investigation Become a color chemist! Scouts will explore density and colorful reactions by learning how to create a beautiful rainbow using just three simple ingredients.
NEW! Modular Design: Webelos Cub Scout Adventure
In this elective adventure, Webelos will dive into the world of modular design, build custom models using modular-based materials (like LEGO or similar building blocks), and practice creating clear, step-by-step directions for others to follow. It’s the perfect blend of creativity, problem-solving, and communication.
Adventure Requirements
To earn the Modular Design adventure pin, Webelos must complete the following six requirements:
1. Discover Modular Design: Learn what modular design is and identify three things in the real world that use modular design in their construction.
2. Free Build: Using modular-based building pieces, build a model completely from your imagination, without using a set of instructions.
3. Write the Manual: Using the model you made in requirement 2, create a set of step-by-step instructions on how to build it.
4. Test Your Instructions: Have someone else try to build your exact model using only the instructions you created.
5. Reimagine & Rebuild: Take the model apart! Using the exact same modular pieces from requirement 2, design and build a completely different model.
6. See It in the Real World: With a parent or legal guardian’s permission, watch a video demonstrating how something in real life was built using modular design.
Girl Scouts Workshop
NEW! Girl Scouts of America Cadette Level: Coding for Good 1: Coding Basics Badge
In this beginner-friendly adventure, you will discover how to write your very first computer program and use your new skills to create a custom meme with a powerful, positive message.
Cadette level Girl Scouts will learn the essential building blocks of programming, including functions and arguments; Explore the science behind how memes are created and what makes a message stick; Learn how to think like a developer by writing pseudocode to plan out your big idea; Write real, shareable code to build your meme from scratch; Share your creation and watch your message ripple outward!

NEW! Girl Scouts of America Cadette Level Robotics (Design, Program, Showcase)
2 – Day Class!
Ages 11 – 14
The Lone Star Flight Museum is offering the Cadette level Robotics three-part series (Designing, Programming, Showcasing), empowering girls to be inventors and engineers by exploring how robots work and their real-world applications. The Robotics workshop will focus on STEM skills, teach girls to design, build, program, and showcase robots to solve problems, while using hands-on activities like creating prototypes from simple materials. Due to scope of the robotics projects and content, this is a two-day, 4 hours per day, workshop. Please come and join us for this workshop where you can earn 3 badges in 2 days!

Discover Aviation Patch
Soar to new heights with the Discover Aviation Patch program! Girl Scouts will learn, experience, and be inspired by the science and art of aviation through innovative and hands-on STEM activities. Girl Scouts will perform a pre-flight inspection on a real aircraft, pilot flight simulators, and conduct experiments based on the fundamentals of flight. After the aviation basics, scouts will explore aviation heritage through museum tours and demonstrate flight dynamics by building a flight model.

Comprehend how electronic devices work and how to use them effectively. Scouts will give a brief history of the changes in digital technology and discuss how technology today compares with the technology available to previous generations—all while imagining what kinds of devices might be available to them in the future.

Search and Rescue Merit Badge
Learn the skills that may someday save a life! An aviation emergency situation may require a team of trained searchers and rescuers who can locate a downed aircraft and return everyone to safety.

Model Design & Building Merit Badge
American Heritage Merit Badge
Our collection of warbirds represents the heritage of the American people that fought to protect the rights outlined in the Constitution. Meet veterans that fought for those rights and hear their stories, discuss how history is depicted in music of wartime eras, learn about local historic places and the events that happened there, and investigate the meaning of the Declaration of Independence and its importance to you and your family.

Requirements fulfilled: Completed in class: 1, 2a&c, 3a-c, 4a-b, 5c, and 6. Requirement 3c will need dome family discussion before class. Req.3c – Research your family’s history. Find out how various events and situations in American history affected your family. If your family immigrated to America, tell the reasons why. Share what you find with your counselor.

Aviation Merit Badge
A hands-on learning experience including fundamentals of flight, aircraft design, and piloting. Prepare a flight plan, map a flight, and conduct a pre-flight inspection in our Mooney Hangar with the Ovation small aircraft. Fly the route in the flight simulators in real time over accurate landscape to land at a local airport. Explore the Flight Academy to demonstrate your knowledge of flight dynamics and tour the collection of Warbirds.

Chemistry Merit Badge
From the food we eat to the jet fuel in airplanes, chemistry explains how substances react with each other at the molecular level to create the world around us. Stretch your imagination to envision molecules that cannot be seen—and can be proven to exist—and see for yourself how elements collide.

Electronics Merit Badge
People skilled in electronics are vital to the aviation industry. Learn the nuts and bolts of electronic devices and how to build and repair them safely. Experiment with electronic components as you build circuits with different basic functions to see how they work, and learn how the same functions are done in microscopic chips in binary code.

Engineering Merit Badge
Get your hands on engineering! Learn how the Wright Brothers were master engineers solving multiple problems to invent powered aircraft. Study the properties of materials by performing heat conductivity and energy transfer experiments, disassemble an engine down to the piston to see how the components make it work, and talk to an engineer to learn about the career opportunities for you.

Radio Merit Badge
Roger Over and Out! Nearly 3 million people around the world operate amateur radios as a way to send information and communicate across the globe. Radios are complex machines which you will unravel and learn the circuitry and frequencies to send messages with no cell towers or internet needed.

Robotics Merit Badge
Design, build, program and test your own robot! Discover the many different ways robotics are connected to everyday life and explore careers that rely on the use of robots like manufacturing, emergency services, and military.

Space Exploration Merit Badge
Study past NASA missions, the Shuttle Transfer System, and astronauts. Use our growing collection of space artifacts – including an original Space Shuttle Trainer flight simulator, the Crew Compartment Trainer, a Mars rover prototype, and an exploratory Mars humanoid rover. Design and build a model off-Earth planetary base, imagine how we can explore the unknown parts of our solar system, and build a model.
Price: $90 for Non-Members. Members save $15! NOTE: This workshop is extended beyond the standard hours of the other scout workshops.
Requirements fulfilled: 1a-d; 2; 3*; 4a-d; 5a&c; 6a; 7a-d; 8. Because LSFM is in restricted air space, we cannot launch model rockets. To complete requirement 3, we will do the alternate of building a scale model of a NASA rocket system. Full completion of badge, no outside work required.

Weather Merit Badge
For local recreational flyers to international commercial carrier pilots, the weather is a challenge, must be understood, and always respected. Learn how to be safe in severe weather, why weather patterns can affect flight dynamics, how different types of weather are formed and how it’s tracked to keep air travel moving. By knowing all the basics, you’ll be able to make your own forecast.

Requirements fulfilled: 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9; 10a; 11; 12. Note: Req. 10a & 11 cannot be fully completed on site. Scouts must record the weather for a week after the workshop using the instrument created in Req. 10a; and then must give a 5-minute talk to their troop on information covered in Req. 2 to complete Req. 11.

Aviation Badge
This interactive workshop provides the opportunity to explore various aspects of aviation including the science and mechanics of flight, the basic process for becoming a pilot, what it’s like to work in the aviation industry, and the process for preparing and planning for flight. A hands-on preflight walk-around and flight simulator experience, Q & A session with an aviation professional, as well as time in the museum exploring the exhibits give a unique hands-on experience to solidify the knowledge learned in the classroom.

Requirements fulfilled: 1-7, 9, 10, & 12. Full completion of badge, no outside work required.
U.S. Military Heroes Badge
Learning how are military work to serve and protect the nation is an important part of being a good citizen of this country they defend. This workshop will educate participants on several topics including: the vital role that our military heroes play, how to prepare and apply for a military academy, and what the Selective Service act is. Girls will also participate in a Q & A session with a female military veteran, learn about strategy through game play, and participate in thanking our military with handmade cards.

Requirements fulfilled: 1-4, 6, 7, & 10.
The following portion of requirement 5 will need to be done outside of the workshop: “Teach younger girls the importance of these days and join with them in serving veterans or participating in a Veterans Day tribute.”
Meteorology Badge
From planning what to wear to preparing for emergencies to learning how our habits can affect the environment around us, the science of weather plays an important role in our lives. This workshop is designed to give an overview of weather and climate, the effects of pollution, major weather events and how to navigate them, and how weather services keep us informed and safe. Hands on activities include building a thermometer and a barometer.

Requirements fulfilled: 1-5, 7, 9, & 10. A prerequisite of monitoring weather forecasts for seven days is required in order to fully complete the badge.
Communications Technology Badge
Communication is an important aspect of our everyday lives, and the way that we achieve communication has evolved tremendously. In this badge workshop, participants will explore important functions of communication in our society, discover how technology has changed the way that we communicate, and gain a understanding of how some of that technology works through hands on activities like building a radio receiver.

The reading portion of requirement 9 will need to be done as a prerequisite to the workshop to fully complete the badge.
